More Thread - Debbie Smyth

More thread awesomeness comes to us this time from Debbie Smyth who paints pretty pictures with pins and needles...

... and cables and nails. I like this one, it looks like what hidden behind my computer and television set.

The Prince's Tweed

Hullo and welcome to this week's edition of Mystery Fabric.
I found 3 meters of Prince of Wales check at a thrift shop last August, washed it and filed it under nice, might come in handy someday and forgot about it until I saw this jumpsuit by Francesco Scognamiglio

I am, forever, trying to make clothes I can wear everyday and failing miserably, but a jumpsuit is something I could wear in real life so I ironed the fabric, which I thought was 100% wool, but it isn't because I gave it a big heavy steam treatment and it didn't smell anything like wool. I don't know what that smell is, I did a burn test and it does act like a natural fiber but I can't tell what it is. Alpaca? Cashmere? Lama? It's weighty, it drapes wonderfully, it feels really good on the skin, it doesn't itch, it hardly shrank when I washed it. Here is a close up of the selvage and tiny soft spun worsted.

If any of you know what this might be, that'd be cool, in the meantime, I'll try to decide whether I might be better off with a lightweight jeans jumpsuit instead of a lightweight Prince of Wales.
Summer is coming isn't it?

The Infinite Dress - McCall's 5360 - Pt.2

I might not need a serger after all.
I found some mat 2-way stretch bathing suit fabric for The Infinite Dress and after washing it, I realized it is never ever going to fray and I might be able to sew it with a regular machine, I think a small zigzag might do the trick. I'll research this a little today and run some tests. I also will be glad if you have any tip other than getting a special sewing needle, which I have.
It is such an extraordinary pattern piece, isn't it? (Yes, it's my tape measure!)
I'll have plenty of remnants, I might get into making some matching underwear, a bathing suit maybe? It'll depend on how the sewing goes and how ambitious I get.
As the fabric matches my couch on the upper left corner, I'll be setting a new elegance standard, matching underwear, dress and decor, I hope someone, somewhere notices the effort.

An while I am at it, on the plane, I'll be asking for the matching seat as well.

The Infinite Dress - McCall's 5360 - 2ème Partie

J'espère qu'on remarquera mes efforts!

Collaborating : Annie Collinge & Sarah May

Annie Collinge - Sarah May

I love sewing with friends.
I love the chitter chatter and the sewing tips and tricks that get passed along. I love the hot tea and the cakes. I'll be doing this with my friend Armelle in a fortnight, so I am cutting a couple of projects for us to sew together. I can't wait.
In the meantime, you can go look at the collaborative work in progress of Annie Collinge and Sarah May which struck a topical chord in me. I would like to tell you that I put that picture up just because I love the print, I do, but I also chose it because it reminds me that some women have a very binding dress code and can't choose what to wear.
I think about them everyday.

Inspiration Ma Motivation

Found Installation Series - Jean Shin

Found Installation Series - Jean Shin

Sew Inspired

Found Installation Series - Jean Shin

I just learned 2 valuable lessons : when sewing, I will never say I'll fix this up later and, I need to sew inspired, stash busting is not my cup of tea.
This project got a wrong-footed start, I bought a two piece wool jersey coupon which after washing turned out to be one wool coupon with a hole and one acrylic coupon... yikkes!

&(§%$€#@&/

I don't have a huge stash as I never buy fabric if I don't know exactly what I am going to do with it. The original idea, a mid-tigh wool dress to wear with leggings, was, quite literally, scrapped by this unsound fabric purchase.
I have nightmare visions that my stash is starting to look like one of Jean Shin's pile of found things, unmanageable, and I don't like to waste, so I thought I would try to make something pretty out of it anyway. It's the 'anyway' part that led me into trouble.

Found Installation Series - Jean Shin

I opted for a very simple belted short sleeve tunic and had to compromise at every step because I didn't have enough fabric... and then I said : "I'll fix the collar later", which was the very last of a series of design, construction, sewing, ironing and handling mistakes I made throughout.
I am not happy with the result which looks amateurish. I won't be showing it to you, you will not learn a thing from my mistakes. Just remember to sew inspired.
I took my machine in for service, it needed a break... and so did I!

A Special Request : Ben 10

I don't sew for Jr C.
Making elastic waist pants and sweatshirt is not my idea of sewing time well spent, but when he asked for a Ben 10 shirt, he is such a fan, I told him we could make this happen together if he wanted.

I took him through the entire process : buying the shirts, cutting, making a pattern for the black stripe in front, tracing the seam allowances, pressing the foot and so on.
I have the vague hope that, if I make stuff with him, he won't be running to the store every time he wants something and that he'll grow up respecting people who make things he uses.

This isn't a tutorial on how to raise your children though, I merely wanted to share how incredibly happy he was with the result and how, just like him, I too jump up and down and scream when a project is completed and looking like I had envisioned.
That elation is a drug.

Sewing Sails

I am not the only person sewing around here.
This baby is Mr C's sewing machine at work. It is used for rigging this French boat, Sodebo. The main sail is over 230m² (over 755 sq. feet!) which is more than twice the size of our house. The set of sails is called a wardrobe, it's quaint.
When I work on a garment, Mr C gets a kick out of saying I sew in the realm of the infinitesimal. So yesterday, as my pattern pieces looked like origami on the table, I asked how precise his sails were and he said very prosaically, +/- 1 cm, which is less than a seam allowance.

Anyhow, this is just an occasion to tell you that Mr C's boss, Thomas Coville, left on Saturday to attempt a single-handed circumnavigation record. It's a blood curling dangerous endeavour.  We'll be doing all kinds of cheering, wishing, hoping and invoking until the end of March.

One would think that 19 years of departures would brace me for the roller coaster ride coming, but nothing does, ever.
