Trust me, I can make a simple project complicated.

Above is a Maison Martin Margiela handbag called the candy wrapper. When I saw it, I had a sudden urge to make one. I took everything from my stash so no driving around to find the right materials was needed which got bonus will-make-now points on Friday afternoon. 

I was even going to write a tutorial about it, but then, I ran into some troubles which turned a quick crafting project into a major headache caused amongst other things by : the nature of materials on hand, the leather from last year's Jill Sander must make bag which stretched under my industrial machine presser foot, a said sewing machine operator malfunction causing some thread breakage and unsightly leather seam ripping holes, both of which made me loose the will to document the making of the said bag. 

Basically, it's a lapped zipper inserted in a tube sealed on the side by 2 seams and some fabric glue strips. To facilitate the zipper insertion, I recommend using the separating kind. If you are using very thick material for a shell, I recommend paying attention to turn of cloth for the lining which is sewed in the side seams and trimmed. If you are using manmade plastic-like material, use another sort of glue because you will melt your project. And yes! these are my old pinking shears, not the new ones!

The end result, after a good hour of stretching the leather on a table corner to straighten it is ok. I know I am reeling now because I just finished it and all I can see is the mistakes, but really, give me a couple of days of oversized metallic clutch carrying practice and I'll have forgotten all about the headache.

Faites-moi confiance, je peux rendre un simple projet compliqué!

Le sac ci-dessus est de la Maison Martin Margiela et s'appelle le "candy wrapper" (l'emballage de bonbon). Quand je l'ai vu, j'ai eu une envie pressante de m'en faire un et comme j'avais tout sous la main, j'ai attaqué tout de go vendredi après-midi.

J'avais l'intention de vous faire un tuto, mais le petit projet facile et rapide s'est transformé en mal de tête carabiné et j'ai perdu le momentum de la documentation. Le cuir, un reste du Jil Sander fait l'an dernier, s'est étiré sous le pied presseur de ma machine industrielle et il y a eu une grosse bourde d'opérateur qui a brisé le fil et m'a forcé à découdre, donc à laisser des trous dans mon sac. 

En gros, c'est une fermeture éclair assymétrique montée dans un tube fermé sur les côtés par 2 coutures et une bande de colle à ourlet. Pour faciliter le montage, un zip séparable est indispensable. Si votre tissu extérieur est très épais, il ajuster la doublure qui est simplement cousue dans les coutures du côté et coupée. Si vous utilisez du tissu plastique ou vinyl, il faudra une autre colle pour ne pas faire fondre votre projet. Et oui, ce sont mes vieux ciseaux à cranter, pas mes tout neufs!

Après un bonne heure à étirer le cuir sur le bord de la table, je ne suis pas trop mécontente du résultat. C'est aussi parce que je viens tout juste de le finir et je ne vois que les défauts. Donnez-moi quelques jours d'entraînement pour avoir l'air cool en ayant une énorme pochette métallique à la main et je vais oublié mon mal de tête!

1 Where did you learn to sew?

I started to customize unisex jeans when I was about 10 or 12, everybody knows girls and boys are not made the same. Then my neighbor, Mme Lavoie, showed me how to follow pattern instructions and created a monster.

2 Which season do you sew most for ?

I am really inspired in the summer, the prints, light cotton, pretty skirts.

3 What do you sew with ?

I have had a Singer Nuance for about 15 years, a Mitsubishi DB130DM and I just bought a Baby Lock Enlighten that I have still to master.

4 What's your favorite dish ?

Fresh pasta made from our chics' eggs, a little butter, salt and pepper.

5 Your favorite place ?

I don't have a favorite place, I have favorite people.

6 What's the blogosphere to you ?

A wonderful place for people who are passionate about something.

7 What's on your sewing table ?

I have a bunch of small gifts to make. Happily, the recipients are used to get their gifts late. I have a coat to finish, but my motivation just went out the door when spring sprang!

Invisible Flower a offert ses patrons à ses lectrices tout le mois de février et j'ai gagné 2 tirages, celui-ci et celui-ci, pour une fois que j'ai un peu de chance! Merci Andrea! La robe ci-dessus est celle qui a le plus de chance d'être fabriquée en premier.

1 Comment as-tu appris à coudre ?

J'ai commencer à customiser des jeans à l'âge de 10-12 ans environ parce que c'était la mode unisex et tout le monde le sait, les filles et les garçons ne sont pas fait pareils. Puis ma voisine, Mme Lavoie m'a montré comment suivre une patron. Elle a crée un monstre.

2 La saison pour laquelle tu couds le plus ?

L'été définitivement, les imprimés, les cotonnades, les jolies jupes et robes m'inspirent.

3 La marque de ta machine à coudre ?

J'ai une Singer Nuance qui a 15 ans à peu près, une Mitsubishi DB130DM et je viens tout juste de m'acheter une surjeteuse Baby Lock Enlighten que je ne maîtrise pas encore.

4 Ton plat préféré ?

Les pâtes fraîches faites avec les oeufs de nos poules avec un peu de beurre, du sel et du poivre.

Les gens me tiennent à coeur, pas les endroits.

6 La blogosphère c'est quoi pour toi ?

Un endroit formidable pour les gens dévorés par une passion particulière.

7 Ton prochain vêtement ou ouvrage à coudre ?

J'ai toute une série de petits cadeaux à faire. Heureusement, les récipiendaires ont l'habitude de les recevoir en retard. J'ai un manteau à terminer, mais j'ai perdu ma motivation quand le printemps a pointé son nez.

J'ai pensé que ça te ferais plaisir un tapis de jeu tout douillet pour quand tu pourras tenir la tête et ramper un peu. 

Je suis vraiment désolée qu'il soit trop grand pour le poser dans ton salon. Les sirènes, chinées chez Emmaüs, sont tellement belles je n'ai pas voulu les couper. 

Je suggère d'aller à la plage ou en pique-nique avec, tu pourras certainement y loger toute ta famille!

I am really sorry that it's too big for your living room. The Mermaids, found in the local op-shop, are so pretty, I didn't want to cut into them.

I suggest you go to the beach or on a picnic, you will certainly be able to fit your whole family on there!

Un Petit Point sur les Boutonnières / A Little Buttonhole Update

Je m'entraîne toujours et comme disent les voileux : "chu pas au vent de la bouée!"

Comme il faudra en faire 7, toutes pareilles, je me suis dit qu'un peu de précision m'aiderait peut-être. J'ai donc acheté de nouveaux outils : un ciseau à bois pour couper la boutonnière et un emporte-pièce pour faire les petits trous pour la tige du bouton. Faire des boutonnières, c'est un peu comme tricoter ou crocheter et beaucoup comme broder, le succès est dans la tension constante, et le même geste répété des centaines de fois. 

J'y retourne, la perfection est dans la répétition.

I am a buttonhole maker in training and I am not there yet!

To help me, I have to make 7 with a high degree of exactitude, I thought some precision tools would help so I bought a chisel for the slit and a punch for the shank hole. I may have a better chance of succeeding if I am very very precise. Making buttonholes is a lot like knitting or crocheting and a lot like embroidery, success lies in repeating the same gesture with the same tension hundreds of times.

Practice makes perfect, I better get back to it.

I am just about to close it and I am wondering if I should topstitch or not, the inspiration vest has topstitching running all around. What do you think?

Je vais fermer la veste et je me demande si je devrais surpiquer ou pas. Le gilet modèle a une surpiqûre qui fait tout le tour. Vous en pensez quoi vous?

21st Century Sewing

I talk to you all the time.

I run an interior monologue addressed to you while I sew that I really wish you could hear.

This week, my interior soliloquy has been about Vogue 8648 which was sent with the Susan Khalje's Crafty class. I made 2 muslin out of it. Muslin one for me and muslin two for Sonia because I have run into a wall of incompetence (mine own) whilst trying to copy and grade her red dress and she is in Paris so the whole process is long tedious and incredibly frustrating because I can't prick her with pins myself. What I could do in an hour of being in the same room as her has turned into months of postal back and forth and I was just about ready to throw in the towel. So I photocopied the small pattern pieces with my new printer-that-does-everything and made her a new muslin in the hope that cutting a similar dress in her size will be easier on both of us.

I opened up the pattern, looked at the sizing, the layout and the instructions, the bodice is constructed in an interesting way, I balked at the sleeve lining instructions which I thought shoddy but I literally had a hissy fit when I saw how and when they ask you to put in the zipper which is at the very end right before the hemming part.

Vogue Patterns, please take us into the 21 Century! Would it be so difficult for you to show us how to make stuff that looks good inside and out?

I haven't seen this type of finish in a store bought item in a good 15 years. I don't know about you, but if I saw a zipper like that on a rack, I wouldn't buy it. Zipper tapes are scratchy, I don't like to feel them on my skin. Even the lowliest of the cheapest H&M lined dress is not made this way. See this strawberry print dress my sister got me on sale last year at Loblaws (Loblaws sells food in Canada)? I think the price tag was $8 and the finish is great.

Would it be so hard for you to show us how to obtain this? I would love to see alternative instructions on your website so we could choose a construction method according to our sewing level. Beginner sewers would benefit greatly from having options.

It's not rocket science to get that sort of finish with a home sewing machine, all the information is here, on the net, but finding is akin to doing a forensic search and sometimes we just don't have the time. I'm not very far into the Craftsy class, my guess is that Suzan won't let that one fly by because it's totally not "couture". 

As for me, if I'm not going to buy a dress with such a poor finish, I am not going to make one either.

Quand je couds, un monologue intérieur vous est adressé, et parfois j'aimerais que vous l'entendiez.

Cette semaine, mon soliloque était à propos du Vogue 8648 qui m'a été envoyé par Craftsy pour suivre la classe de Susan Khalje. J'en ai fait 2 toiles, une pour moi et une pour Sonia parce que j'ai atteint mon niveau d'incompétence en matière de couture en essayant de copier et d'agrandir sa robe rouge. De plus, elle vit à Paris et le processus est long, lancinant et pénible parce que ce qui me prendrait une heure ou deux si je pouvais la piquer moi-même s'est transformé en plusieurs mois d'aller-retour postaux. J'ai photocopié les petites pièces du patron avec ma nouvelle imprimante tout-en-un et je lui ai fait une autre toile dans l'espoir que j'aurai moins de difficultés avec une robe qui est déjà à sa taille.

J'ai ouvert le patron, regardé la taille, le plan de coupe et les instructions : les instructions pour le montage du corsage sont intéressantes, j'ai un peu rechigné quand j'ai vu le montage des manches et j'ai carrément pété une durite quand j'ai vu quand et comment la fermeture éclair était montée, à la fin, juste avant le ourlet. 

Chers Patrons Vogue, s'il-vous-plaît, nous sommes au 21ème siècle, est-ce que ce serait difficile pour vous de nous montrer comment faire des vêtements jolis à l'intérieur comme à l'extérieur? 

Ça doit faire une bonne quinzaine d'année que je n'ai pas vu un zip monté comme ça dans un magasin. Je ne peux pas parler pour vous, mais je n'achèterais pas un robe finie de cette manière, les fermetures direct sur la peau, ça gratte. Même la robe doublée la plus cheap de chez H&M n'est pas finie comme ça. Vous voyez cette robe avec des grosses fraises que ma soeur m'a acheté pour $8cad en solde l'été dernier chez Loblaws (Loblaws est une chaîne de supermarchés au Canada)? Même elle, elle est bien finie!

Ça serait vraiment difficile pour vous de nous montrer comment obtenir ce résultat? J'aimerais ça voir des instructions alternatives sur votre site, on pourrait choisir le niveau de finition selon notre niveau de couture et les débutantes en profiteraient grandement.

On est pas en train d'envoyer des fusées sur la lune, on veut juste coudre comme il faut avec nos outils, mais l'information est difficile à obtenir et la rechercher prend du temps qu'on n'a pas toujours. (Mes lectrices pourront trouver des tutoriels en anglais chez Sew For Fun pour une doublure partielle, Sherry pour une doublure complète et chez Colette pour monter une parementure. Je n'ai pas tout vu le cours de chez Craftsy, mais j'ai bon espoir que Suzan ne va pas faire le montage de cette façon, ce ne serait pas "couture". 

Pour ma part, si je n'achèterais pas une robe avec une finition si pauvre, je n'en ferai pas une non plus.

Couture de Fin de Semaine / Weekend Sewing

J'essaie vraiment de ne pas coudre le samedi et le dimanche. Je n'y arrive pas toujours.

Quand Jr C a déclaré qu'il lui fallait un sac expressément pour ses livres de Tintin et qu'on allait le faire ensemble, je n'ai pas pu résister. J'aime vraiment bricoler avec les enfants, bien que je ne sois pas très bonne à faire d'autre chose que de la couture, ce sont des moments particuliers, riches et précieux.

On a choisi le tissu dans la pile, on a pris sa vieille ceinture de judo, de la bouclerie plastique que j'ai récupéré sur un vieux sac et des patchs que j'avais depuis longtemps.

Il a presque 9 ans alors cette fois-ci il est resté concentré jusqu'au bout, maniant le fer à repasser, et la machine tant bien que mal. On a passé un très bel après-midi, et bien après encore, il s'entraînait à coudre droit. Il est très mignon quand il est concentré mon fils.

I really try not to sew on weekends. I am not always successful.

So when Jr C said he needed a new bag for his Tintin books and that he would make it with me, I couldn't say no. I love to craft with children, though I am no good at anything else than sewing, moments like these are precious and rich.

We chose some fabric from the stash, got a judo belt, some plastic buckles I saved from an old bag and some funky patches I've had for a long time.

He is almost 9 so this time, he was able to keep concentrated from start to finish, ironing and using the machine as best he could. We spent a great afternoon and well into the night, he was still working on his straight stitches. My son is so cute when he is concentrating.
