My New Sewing Tool

I love my iPad and yes, I consider it my new sewing tool. 

It takes better close up pictures than any other devices in the house, I can watch my Craftsy classes in the comfort of my favorite recliner, read and prepare blog posts, comment on them, prop it up near the machine for complicated tutorials, do quick research on some techniques, pullout the stuff I have bookmarked for reference, make notions shopping lists, read your mail, photograph the back of pattern envelopes for yardage, it's endless! 

Next, somebody will come up with a application to do my pattern drafting and I'll just have to press print!

This device has reduced the back and forth computer shuffle I was doing all the time to zero which may mean I'll have to exercise more, but I do love it. I feel so put together and organized!

Should I need to bring it with me somewhere like a hypothetical sewing blogger meet up in a far far away country... because it doesn't look like there is going to be a reunion of anything anytime soon around here, I made a bag for it.

Map The Sewinists

It's pretty simple construction-wise, several rectangles put together, but I did want some features that I haven't seen much in iPad carriers, mostly a little bit more space to put in a charger, a phone, fabric samples and bits and bobs because, you know I'm a girl and need the extra space. I made two, the other one is going to a Pay It Forward recipient (you know that bit right? you make a handmade gift for five random people and they in turn make a handmade gift for five random people, I set it up on my personal FB page).

I quite like it actually and have been using it as a handbag, it's a good size, roomy enough for my knick-knackery, it's practical, it matches my coat and all the materials used come from either another project, like the blue bag, or the local Salvation Army. You can't be feeling bad about that!

Though it needs refinement and fine tuning solely for aesthetic's purposes, it's a good bag. And when I'm finished with using it everyday, it'll do a fine job of carrying an electronic device.

The Enablers / Les Facilitateurs

I surrounded by enablers and I'll never be thankful enough.
We had lunch with Héloise et Antoine the other day and I came home with a storing bin full of lace and buttons and thread and silk fabric and a boat load of upholstery leather they had put away for me.
I'm already planning to make another handbag.
My sewing list is so long I'll have to start sewing 24/7 or hire an assistant.

J'ai des facilitateurs autour de moi et je ne leur dirai jamais assez merci.
On a déjeuné avec Héloïse et Antoine l'autre jour et je suis rentrée à la maison avec un grand bac de rangement plein de boutons, dentelles, fil, soie et un gros tas de cuir de sellerie qu'ils avaient mis de côté pour moi.
Je travaille déjà sur mon prochain sac à main.
Ma liste de trucs à faire est tellement longue maintenant que je vais devoir coudre 24h/24 ou engager une assistante.

Deep Six

I'm pretty organized.

When I start a project, I gather all the necessary fabric, trim notions, in a ziplock and I whenever ready or in the mood, I start on the project. 

I started this three years ago and you know what? I am not going to finish it. I hate the color, I hate the fabric I chose, I hate the fit, I loath the crotch, I hate the tiny pockets, this style of pants doesn't suit me and I am never ever going to wear them even if finish them. 

So I unpicked the zipper and chucked it.

This is supposed to be liberating right? It's not. I still have so much work. Pants geometry eludes me. I have yet to make a pair that looks, feels and fit right. 

I keep delaying the toile making, but I'm running out of options my favorite jeans are about to die and I'll have to do something about this very soon.

So I bought a Japanese jeans pattern, my favorite pair is Japanese, and I have just received the pant pattern that comes with Sandra Betzina's class.

I'll eventually get to it...in a near distant future.

C'est Mort!

Je suis assez organisée.

Quand je commence un projet, je mets dans un ziploc toutes les fournitures nécessaires et dès que je suis dans le mood, je commence le projet.

J'ai commencé ce pantalon il y a 3 ans et vous savez quoi? Je ne le finirai jamais. Je hais la couleur, je hais le tissu choisi, je hais le tombé, je hais l'entrejambe, je hais les toutes petites poches, le modèle ne me va pas du tout et même si je le finissais, je ne le porterais pas.

J'ai donc décousu le zip et j'ai jeté le reste.

J'ai fait ça en pensant me sentir libérée, mais non. Faire un beau pantalon me semble insurmontable, la géométrie m'échappe. Je n'ai jamais fait de pantalon qui me sied parfaitement.

Je retarde la fabrication d'une toile mais mes options s'amenuisent, mon jean favori va bientôt me lâcher, et il faudra bien que je m'y mette très bientôt.

J'ai donc acheté un patron de jeans japonais, mon jeans favori vient du Japon, et je viens de recevoir le patron qui vient avec la classe de Sandra Betzina. 

Je vais finir par m'y coller...dans un distant futur proche.

The Winners / Les Gagnantes

One of the thing I want to try to do, this is by no means a resolution as I can't keep those, is to use my scraps right away instead of sitting on them for a gazillion years and feeling totally overwhelmed by them. 

So, as soon as I finished the red dress, I went hunting for a cheap t-shirt pattern and decided to try out the Lekala free top pattern. Lekala is so enticing, it's very cheap and they promise to send you a made to measure pattern, it IS a seamstress' wet dream. 

I barely had enough fabric to make this, hence the cute cap sleeves and this version here is with absolutely no fitting whatsoever, no pressing either for that matter and still, it looks pretty good. It fits weird under the breast, this might be a wrong bra issue, the bottom part is a little loose at the front, but this might have been because I was sitting down at the computer when I took my measurements (duh!). 

I did think that this top was not my style, but I like it. I can totally envision doing a couple of t-shirt refashions with some light tweaking so I will be hanging on to the pattern. I might even order more from them as I find some of their designs quite inspiring but next time I'll give them some good measurements.

Une des chose que je veux essayer de faire, ceci n'est pas une résolution je ne les garde jamais, est d'utiliser mes restes rapidement au lieu de les garder pour pendant des millions d'années et de me sentir dépassée.

Dès que j'ai fini ma robe rouge, je me suis mise à la recherche d'un patron pas cher et j'ai décidé d'essayer un patron gratuit de chez Lekala. Le concept chez Lekala est très séduisant, vous envoyez vos mesures et ils vous envoient un patron vraiment pas cher à votre taille, le St-Graal pour une couturière.

Je n'avais pas tout à fait assez de tissu, d'ou les jolies petites manches courtes, et je vous présente le patron tel quel, sans retouches ni repassage. C'est un peu bizarre sous la poitrine, c'est peut-être un problème de soutien-gorge, et la partie basse est un peu large mais je n'avais qu'à prendre mes mesures comme il faut, pas assise devant l'ordinateur!

Je pensais pas que c'était mon style, mais je l'aime. J'me vois bien faire du recyclage de t-shirt avec ce patron alors je vais le garder et lui faire de très légères modifications. Je vais peut-être même en commander d'autre, certains de leurs modèles sont très inspirants, mais la prochaine fois, je vais leur donner de vraies mesures.

I don't knit a lot. 

There is no need here, the weather is never cold enough for the big chunky sweater I love to wear, I don't need wool socks, I have underfloor heating, and I own enough scarfs in enough colours to last me a lifetime which I hardly ever wear anyway.

I'm not a bad knitter, it's just I don't see the point of making stuff which is going to be eaten my moths in my overflowing drawers. I'd rather take the time and make another coat which I know I'm going to wear.

But Lou, born last month, needs extreme cosiness at all time so I made him a blanket with wool and alpaca. I've made these several times and the idea comes from a cotton dishcloth I used to make with my Mom, all you have to do is run with it until you've knitted 2 skeins and then decrease. It's very beginner friendly!

Je ne tricote plus beaucoup.

Il n'y en a pas besoin ici, la température ne descend jamais assez pour porter les gros pulls irlandais que j'adore, j'ai un chauffage au sol je n'ai plus besoin de grosses chaussettes et j'ai un arc-en-ciel d'écharpes que je porte rarement de toute manière.

Je ne suis pas mauvaise en plus, c'est juste que je ne vois pas trop l'intérêt de passer autant de temps sur des trucs qui finissent mangés par les mites dans mes tiroirs déjà pleins. Je préfèrerais me faire un autre manteau que je porterai tous les jours.

Mais Lou, né le mois dernier, a besoin de chaleur en tout temps alors je lui ai fait un petite couverture en alpaca et laine. C'est la ènième fois que j'en fais, c'est dérivé d'un patron de lingette en coton que je faisais avec ma mère. La seul différence c'est qu'il faut tricoter 2 balles de laine puis diminuer. C'est parfait pour les débutantes!

I am so sorry, I have had to buy some more Alexander Henry. 

I have wonderful customers you see and they've ordered some stuff custom made for them which I can't talk about because it's a surprise. It'll be wicked!

Expect me to bore you with what I do with the leftovers in the coming weeks! 

Ordering fabric from the States can be a little hair raising sometimes (like the Galactica I ordered in August, and got in November, not the seller's fault I must say, but still with that much money out, I get nervous) and I would like to thank the good folks at The Fabric Patch whose patience with my impatience was above and beyond normal customer service. Their online store in down now, I'm sure it'll re-open pretty soon, but if I have to pull another stunt like this, I'll call them.

Commander du tissu aux US est parfois épeurant (comme le Galactica commandé en août et arrivé en novembre, je dois dire que ce n'étais pas la faute du vendeur, mais avoir autant d'argent dans la nature ça rend nerveux!) et je voulais remercier publiquement les gens très sympatiques chez The Fabric Patch qui ont fait preuve de beaucoup de patience avec mon impatience et dont le service après-vente a été plus qu'exemplaire. I am not going to make Butterick 6135, who wants it?

You see, it's been languishing in my project pile since Suzanne destashed a couple of years ago, in a ziplock bag with the fabric and notions, ready to be graded, cut and sewn. With a serger, it can't take more than an afternoon, to start and finish that project and yet, it slowly made it's way to the bottom of the to-do pile.

I think it's because I'll never ever wear it. I think it's because my 50 year old breast has it's own mind and would walk away in a different direction if I freed it.

But I love this dress, it's begging to be made! When I was like 14-15, everybody had one, it's a great beginner's dress and I'm sure somebody out there with a beginner's breast (aka small and perky) would rock this.

So if you want it, you have to swear you'll make it in the comments before February 14th. If you are more than one, I'll get a number generator to pick a winner. I ship worldwide.

Je ne ferai pas Butterick 6135, qui en veut?

Il est sur ma liste de trucs à faire depuis que Suzanne m'a donné ses restes il y a au moins 2 ans, dans une pochette plastique avec le tissu et la mercerie, prêt à modifier, couper et coudre. Avec une surjeteuse, ça ne peut pas prendre plus d'un après-midi pourtant, peu à peu, il est descendu au bas de la pile.

Je crois que c'est parce que je ne la porterai pas. Je crois que c'est parce que si je laissais ma poitrine cinquantenaire libre, elle partirai dans le sens contraire de la marche.

Mais j'aime cette robe, elle ne demande qu'à être fabriquée! Tout le monde en avait une quand j'avais 14-15 ans, c'est une super robe pour une débutante avec des petits seins fermes.

Si vous la voulez, vous devez promettre de la faire dans les commentaires avant le 14 février (n'oubliez pas de m'indiquer comment vous joindre). Si vous êtes plus d'une, on fera un petit loto. C'est ouvert à tous, partout dans le monde.

Burda 08/2012 #134

Poor sad january Christmas tree!

You won't believe this ...
I had a bit of the red wool left, just enough to make a little skirt with this Burda pattern from last August. I had it on the back of my mind, it's a good style for me and I had vague plans to sew summer skirts with it. I made a 38, added 4cm, an old age allowance, and lined it.
And ... I was so good at stash busting (part 1-2-3-4-5), that I had no contrasting fabric to make the facing with, so I took some purple Galactica. I now have huge boobs on my waistline!

Worn with my coat, it's very smart. Still too chic to wear in my everyday life, but dressed down with my Decemberists t-shirt and my Liberty Nike, it's ok. I may wear more skirts in the winter as a result.

There is some knitting going on here, it's rare enough to be mentioned, but it's a secret, you'll have to wait to hear more about it.

Burda Août 2012 #134

Oh! La vilaine qui n'a pas rangé son arbre de Noël!

Vous ne me croirez pas...

Il me restait un petit bout de laine rouge, juste assez pour faire cette petite jupe à 4 panneaux du Burda du mois d'août 2012. Je l'avais dans le collimateur depuis un moment celle-là parce c'est une forme de jupe qui me va bien, j'avais déjà l'intention de la faire l'été prochain. J'ai coupé le 38 allongé de 4cm pour cause de grand âge et je l'ai doublé.

Mais ... j'ai tellement bien réussi à me débarrasser de mes petits bouts de tissus (vol 1-2-3-4-5), que je me suis retrouvée sans tissu adéquat pour faire la parementure! Alors, j'ai pris un peu de Galactica et maintenant j'ai des gros seins à la taille!

Avec mon manteau c'est très joli, bien qu'un peu chic pour la majorité des occasions que j'ai de la porter, alors, pour tous les jours, j'ai choisi de la porter avec un t-shirt du groupe The Decemberists, un cardigan assorti et mes Nike Liberty. Le résultat est assez probant, je porterai peut-être plus de jupes l'hiver.

Ça tricote ici, c'est assez rare pour être mentionné, mais je ne peux pas vous en dire plus, c'est un secret.

Ladies and Gentlemen, This is The Coat

It is impossible to photograph this coat!

Yes, it is that bright and yes, I stand out like a sore thumb, I so stand out that more people have asked me for directions in the past week than in my entire life!

When wearing a coat this bright, you realize nobody else wears colors in winter. We navigate in a sea of navy blue, black, grey, occasional beige-brown and when lucky some red, which I find really depressing. What better way to cheer yourself up in grey mid-winter 0°C weather than to wear something almost fluorescent.

The good part about not being able to photograph this is that you can't see all the mistakes. I'm cursed you know, that's all I see even though I know that ultimately it doesn't matter, people will be blinded by the color, not my awful top-stitching.
It's so bright that if you want to nitpick, you got to wear shades!

ps for the people who have noticed : I didn't do my huge Vuitton inspired bound buttonholes, one of the mistakes I made is that I didn't re-draft the facing and so I wasn't able to put them in. Zut!

Mesdames et Messieurs voici Le Manteau

Ce manteau est impossible à photographier.
La couleur est tellement intense que je brille, je brille tellement qu'on m'a demandé plus de renseignements dans la rue cette semaine que pendant toute ma vie!
C'est quand on porte une couleur comme celle-ci qu'on se rend compte qu'on passe l'hiver dans une mer de noir, gris, marine, d'un peu de beige ou marron et parfois du rouge, c'est déprimant. Pourtant, quand il fait un beau 0°C tout gris, une couleur comme celle-ci rend joyeux et souriant.
L'avantage de cette couleur impossible a photographier, c'est que vous ne pouvez pas voir les erreurs. Je suis maudite vous savez, je ne vois que des erreurs que personne ne remarque. Aveuglés par la couleur, vous ne verrez pas mes surpiqûres ratées.

Et si vous voulez les voir, sortez vos lunettes de soleil.

ps pour ceux et celles qui auraient remarqué : je n'ai pas fait mes grosses boutonnières passepoilées inspirées par Vuitton, j'ai oublié de modifier la parementure et je n'ai pas pu les mettre. Zut!

Scrap Busting Part 5

I think it's about time you saw some of the Christmas gifts I made.

I know, they are quite mundane, but I am determined to get my scrap heap down to a manageable level, I'm almost there, and we all need little zippered pouches to put stuff in, so I made a bunch. A bunch of about 50.

The interesting thing here is not so much what I made, but rather how I prepared the work so making them would be quick and painless. Last year, I ran into some problems when by the end of the Christmas crafting season, my pattern had gotten smaller because everytime I used the rotary, I cut a tiny sliver of the paper pattern. I finished making my gifts very tense because I had to adjust and wiggle and fidget with the fabric all the time. But not this year, this year it was a breeze for, this year, I joined the pros!

Pencils & Shell Pattern 

I made some samples, when happy with them, I made a sturdy pattern out of some stiff plastic, one for the shell and one for the interfacing.

Interfacing Pattern

I traced the pattern with the pencils the Kathleen recommends. I cut all the lines with the rotary cutter, interfaced, and when I sewed, I chained the work exactly like Jen from Grainline showed us in her neat little video.

This was quite a revelation for me. One might say it's about time for it took me a few years to see the light but, in my daily sewing life, I rarely make multiple anything except right before Christmas. I had the information but no use for it. Now that I'm sold on this method, I'll have to wait until the end of the year as I role out the Yuletide production line to use it again. And I will.

Accomoder les Restes Vol 5

Il est temps de vous montrer quelque uns des cadeaux que j'ai fait.

Je sais, ils sont très ordinaires, mais ma détermination à réduire ma pile de restes est sans faille et on a tous besoin de petite pochettes zippées pour mettre des trucs dedans alors j'en ai fait une pile, une grosse pile, une cinquantaine.

Ce qui est intéressant, c'est pas tellement ce que j'ai offert, mais comment je les ai fait rapidement et sans stress. L'an dernier, je suis passée proche de la crise de nerf parce sans m'en rendre compte, à chaque fois que je coupais, il y avait des petits bouts de patrons qui partaient avec le cutter rotatif et à la fin, plus rien ne s'alignait et j'ai du tirer et ajuster les tissus et j'ai beaucoup juré. Mais pas cette année, parce que cette année, suis passée pro!

Crayons Gras et Patron 

J'ai fais des prototypes et quand j'ai été contente, j'ai fait un patron avec un plastique épais, un pour l'extérieur et un pour l'entoilage.

J'ai tracé le patron au crayon gras, les mêmes recommandés par Kathleen, j'ai coupé toutes les lignes au cutter rotatif, entoilé et enchaîné la couture comme sur la petite vidéo de Jen chez Grainline.
Ce fut une révélation pour moi. On pourrait dire qu'elle est tardive puisque j'ai mis quelques années à voir enfin la lumière, mais dans ma vie de couturière normale, je fais rarement de si grandes quantités sauf aux alentours de Noël. Je connaissais la méthode mais n'en avais pas l'utilité. Maintenant que je l'ai adopté, il me faudra attendre à la fin de l'année pour rouvrir la ligne de production saisonnière.

A Coat Update / Le Manteau MàJ

J'ai rêvé que mon manteau s'effilochait, je devrais peut-être appeler ça un cauchemar.

Pendant la coupe, je me suis demandé si j'étais pas mieux de surjeter les marges, je ne l'ai pas fait.

Pendant la construction, je me suis dis, bah ça va tenir. 

Mais ce matin, juste avant d'insérer la doublure, j'ai eu un doute et je me suis dit que ce n'étais pas la peine d'avoir passé autant de temps sur ce manteau pour le voir se désintégrer.

J'ai donc repris toutes les marges au point de chausson. Mieux vaut prévenir que guérir.

I dreamt my coat was unraveling. No, it was a nightmare.

While cutting, I wondered if it was a good idea to serge the sewing margins, but I didn't do it. 

During construction, I thought nah it'll hold up. 

But this morning, right before inserting the lining, I had a doubt and thought I hadn't spend all this time on this coat to watch it disintegrate.

So I catch stitched all the margins. Better safe than sorry.

Remember when I proudly made, in an effort to recycle 300m2 of Cuben Fiber, lightweight computer bags? 

The sail used had been round the world a couple of times, and it quickly was made obvious that anything I made with it would self-destroy because the fabric was delaminating. After a good year of wear and several slapdash repairs with tape of all sorts, Jean-Michel's test bag looked like this.

I felt really bad as he had bought all the expensive buckles and trim and stuff, so the first thing I did this year was to make him a replacement bag.

Vous vous rappelez quand j'ai fait, en tentant de recycler 300m2 de Cuben Fiber, des besaces pour ordinateur ultra légères?
La voile utilisée avait fait le tour du monde 2 fois et après quelques jours, il est devenu évident que tout ce que je ferais avec se désintégrerait au toucher parce que le tissu se délaminait. Après un an d'utilisation et plusieurs réparations à la va-vite avec du scotch, le sac test de Jean-Michel ressemblait à ça.
Il avait acheté la bouclerie et les galons à prix d'or et ça me faisait mal au coeur de le voir se balader avec ce truc pourri alors la première chose que j'ai fait cette année, c'est de remplacer son sac.

This time I used leftovers from the Cordura sailbags I made last year, a bit of really thick black cotton twill I found in a thrift shop with which I made the bias tape and the lining and I pilfered the buckles from the derelict Cuben bag. It's the best looking messenger bag I have made so far, with shoulder strap pad if you please, and I predict it'll last a long time.

I feel so much better. Good way to start a year.

Cette fois-ci, j'ai utilisé les restes de Cordura utilisé pour les sacs à voile et un bout de sergé de coton très épais trouvé chez Emmaüs avec lequel j'ai fait le biais et la doublure, j'ai chapardé la bouclerie de l'ancien sac. C'est la plus belle besace que j'ai fait jusqu'à maintenant, j'ai même fait un petit coussinet pour son épaule. Celui-ci, je suis certaine, qu'il va durer longtemps.
Je me sens beaucoup mieux. C'est une bonne façon de commencer l'année.
