The Bakugan Bag

My son is growing exponentially but he refuses to let me give away his clothes.

So the other day I asked "Why?" and he said "Because we can make something with it!". 

Very noble, I wasn't going to let that one go! I explained that I wasn't going to refashion everything he outgrows, but I may be able to do something to store his growing Bakugan collection if he let me think about it.

I took a pair of pants, cut it all up and made a small messenger bag with his old judo belt for a strap. The flap is the front leg which had a decorative faux-pocket and I used a back pocket to store the cards. 

Heck! I didn't make just one, I made 2, my nephews' birthday was last week. It's shipping today.

Le Sac Bakugan

Mon fils grandit exponentiellement, mais il ne veut pas que je donne ses vêtements.
Je lui ai demandé "pourquoi" la semaine dernière et il m'a dit "parce qu'on peut faire des choses avec".
Cause noble, il fallait pas que je laisse passer ça! 

Je lui ai expliqué que je n'allait pas pouvoir refaçonner tout ses vêtements mais que j'allais essayer de faire quelque chose pour sa collection grandissante de Bakugan si il me laissait un peu de temps pour réfléchir.

J'ai découpé un pantalon et, avec sa vieille ceinture de judo, j'ai fait une petite besace avec devant, la poche décorative de la jambe et dedans, la poche derrière pour mettre les cartes. 

J'en ai même fait 2! L'anniversaire de mon neveu était la semaine dernière. Ça part aujourd'hui.

The Infinite Dress - McCall's 5360 - The Wrap Up

I had so much fun. 

We had amazing weather all weekend and I got to play with my new dress... and played, and played ...

... and then played some more. There are a few style that fit me better, but once you have it on, you actually forget about it. Wrapped up properly, I can even wear it without a bra! 

It doesn't pull, tug, squeeze, it's awesome comfortable and I don't think I own another garment so playful and fun!

The Infinite Dress is very modern for a 35 year old! I knew it was a winner!

Qu'est-ce que je me suis amusée!
Le temps a viré au beau et j'ai pu jouer avec ma nouvelle robe... et j'ai joué, et joué...

... et joué encore un peu. Il y a quelques styles qui me vont mieux que d'autres mais une fois la combinaison de noeuds choisie, on l'oublie facilement. Je peux même la porter sans soutien-gorge dans certaines configurations!
Elle ne pince pas, tire pas, serre pas donc elle est très confortable. Je ne crois pas posséder un autre vêtement aussi le fun!

La Robe Infinie est très moderne pour ses 35 ans. Je savais qu'elle serait un succès!

Sewing For Two : The 2011 Edition

I finished something yesterday.

It feels really good because I have several projects going on at the same time and I feel like I am suffering from ADD.

I used Craftzine's Reversible Skirt pattern and the rest of the Alexander Henry Thunder Flower that I love so much and made two skirts, one for my sister, who will wear anything I send over, and one for me. 

I was working with whatever I had left and I had some patchwork to do on the blue skirt. Now I really am all out, except for really small scraps with which I might make some covered buttons for the girls.

It's an easy enough skirt to make, but my European readers should note that they will have some pattern drafting to do. It came out of the printer all warped when printing in A4. I didn't make the pockets, I didn't like their shape and remember to be careful when ironing, the elastic will melt.

This is basically what I am going to be wearing all summer. A very loud printed skirt with funky sneakers. In winter, replace the skirt with jeans (Sorry for the fuzzy over-exposed picture, I was working alone).

I am very particular about my jeans, I can try 40 pairs before settling on one and boy! do I ever get crazy about my trainers. I once called Citadium everyday to get a pair of silver Nike Sprint, ran around Paris for a day chasing yellow polka dotted Gola's. In 2009, I sent my sister to Opening Ceremony in LA and my brother to the one in NY to get a pair of Liberty Nikes Cherry, which I didn't get. 

So Wednesday morning, having learned through Twitter that these would be on sale at 10am, I set my computer to London time and refreshed that page every 30 seconds to make sure I would get a pair of Tatum Print Liberty Nikes. 

They came in yesterday, almost instant gratification and a very cool gift from Mr C.

Coudre Pour Deux - Edition 2011

J'ai terminé quelque chose hier.

Ça fait vraiment du bien car j'ai plusieurs projets en cours et j'ai l'impression de souffrir de TDA.
J'ai utilisé le patron gratuit de jupe réversible de chez Craftzine et le reste de Thunder Flower d'Alexander Henry que j'aime tant et j'ai fait une jupe pour ma soeur qui met tout ce que je lui envoie et une pour moi. 

J'ai du faire un peu de patchwork pour avoir assez de tissu pour faire la bleue et maintenant ce qui me reste est vraiment tout petit, assez pour faire quelques boutons pour les filles.
C'est une jupe assez facile à faire, mais mes lectrices européennes devront faire du patronage parce à l'impression sur A4, la sortie est un peu faussée. J'ai pas fait les poches je ne les aimait pas et si je peux vous donner un petit conseil, ne repassez pas l'élastique, il va fondre.

Voici ce que je vais porter tout l'été. Une jupe avec des gros motifs et des baskets colorés. En hiver, substituez la jupe pour un jean (Désolée pour la photo flou et sur-exposée, je l'ai prise toute seule).
Je suis assez maniaque de jean et du basket. Je suis connue pour être capable d'essayer 40 paires de jeans avant d'en choisir un et je deviens folle quand il s'agit du choix de shoeclack. J'ai appelé Citadium tous les jours pendant des semaines pour avoir des Nike Sprint argent, couru partout dans Paris pour avoir des Gola à pois jaunes, j'ai envoyé ma soeur chez Opening Ceremony à LA, mon frère à celui de New York pour les Liberty Nike Cherry qu'ils n'ont jamais trouvés.
Alors mercredi, en ayant appris sur Twitter qu'une nouvelle collection sortait à 10h, j'ai réglé mon ordinateur à l'heure de Londres et j'ai rafraichi tous les 30 secondes pour être certaine d'avoir une paire de Tatum Print Liberty Nikes. 

Elles sont arrivées le lendemain, gratification presque instantanée, un joli cadeau de Mr C.

The 4000 Dresses Collection

A friend of mine called me last week, telling me there would be a few vintage dresses for sale to help rebuild a school in Sénégal.

Imagine my surprise when I saw this.

There were 4000 dresses up for sale, all of them bought by this one woman who collected prom-wedding-evening ball gowns. 

Imagine, 4000 dresses in one woman's closet. I'm still speechless!

La Collection de 4000 Robes

Une amie m'a appelé la semaine dernière pour me dire que quelques robes vintage seraient mises en vente pour aider à reconstruire une école au Sénégal.

Imaginez ma surprise quand j'ai vu ça!
Il y avait la collection entière d'une seule femme qui toute sa vie a acheté des robes de bal, de mariée, de finissant. 

La garde-robe de cette femme contenait 4000 robes. Je suis toujours sans voix.

My Doilies

Long time readers of this blog know that I am collecting doilies to make a skirt.

At first, I was doing it in an offhanded way as I couldn't think of an occasion to wear such a beautiful skirt, but my parents will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in August, and obviously this is a good enough reason to start the project.

Here is what I plan on doing : I will first make a muslin of the skirt, baste the doilies and tie them up together with little crocheted flowers. It's a pretty good plan I think except, I don't really know how to crochet. I took it up briefly in December to make snowflakes, but really I have a lot of learning to do.

If you know of a good crochet related resource or have a better idea on how to do this, I am all ears. In the meantime, I'll try to find a Crocheting for Dummies book or something.

Mes Napperons

Les lecteurs de longue date savent que  je collectionne les napperons pour faire une jupe.
Au début, je ne le faisais pas avec beaucoup de conviction puisque que je n'avais pas d'occasion spéciale, sauf qu'en août, mes parents vont célébrer leur 50 ans de mariage et c'est une excellente raison de démarrer le projet.
Voici mon plan : je vais faire une toile de la jupe, faufiler les napperon dessus et les relier avec des petites fleurs en crochet. Je crois que c'est un bon plan, mon seul problème c'est que je ne sais pas vraiment crocheter. J'ai repris un tout petit peu en décembre pour faire des flocons de neige mais j'ai encore beaucoup à apprendre.
Si vous connaissez une meilleure manière de faire ça ou si vous avez un filon pour apprendre, je vous écoute. En attendant, je vais essayer de trouver un "Crochet Pour Les Nuls" ou quelque chose dans le genre.

I am not collecting tweed!

I am collecting doilies for that skirt I want to make. It's just that while rummaging, I keep running into yardage and yardage of luscious woolen fabric. Obviously, somebody somewhere donated all his priceless tweed to Emmaüs here in Brittany and I have been snapping it up.

I knew nothing about John G Hardy Alsport heavyweight tweed before. I didn't know that kings wore any and that they are appointed by the Queen of England. I certainly didn't know that if I was to walk into a store and buy some, it would cost me £64 per meter. I would not go into a store and buy fabric at that price. 

Moth hole

Anyhow, I did pay only 4€ for 2 meters and I'll have to dance around some little moth holes here and there, but heck! I might have a riding coat in the works somewhere in me. Anybody here knows how to mend?

Je ne collectionne pas le tweed.
Je collectionne les napperons pour faire cette jupe. Mais il semble qu'à chaque fois que je chine, je trouve des mètres et des mètres de laine. Quelqu'un, quelque part a fait don de tweed de grand prix à Emmaüs et  il n'y a que moi que ça intéresse.

Je ne connaissait rien du tweed John G Hardy Alsport avant. Je ne savais pas que des rois en ont porté et qu'il sont fournisseur officiel de la Reine d'Angleterre. Je ne me doutais pas qu'il me faudrait débourser £64 le mètre, d'ailleurs, je n'irais pas dans un magasin acheter du tissu à ce prix là. (désolée les liens sont en anglais!)

Trou de mite

Ceci dit, j'ai eu 2 mètres pour 4€. Je vais devoir esquiver quelques trous de mites mais, j'ai peut-être une veste d'équitation en moi à quelque part! Est-ce que quelqu'un sait comment repriser?

The Frankenpattern Vivienne Westwood Muslin

Muslin n° 2 of Butterick 9214.
Although I haven't found the right fabric and spring is coming, I am constantly thinking about my future beautiful red winter coat as I wear the house coat every morning. I also thought I could do a test run with the fabulous tweed I found, but I changed my mind when I saw this. I'll come up with a better project for it.
I nicknamed it the Frankenpattern because of all the bits and pieces that I have taken everywhere to make all the changes I wanted.
I changed the sleeves and the armscye (Burda  08/2010 #113) so I could wear a sweater underneath, and after seeing this Derek Lam shawl collar hood, I added one as well (Burda 2694). It does rain a lot in the winter here, it might come in handy.

I lifted the skirt from the Vogue 3000, because all the gathers at the waist on the original were a bit much for a coat. I have some tweaking to do on the sash and I have put some side pockets which you don't see here.

I still have issues with the sleeves, the ease need to be distributed better but, I am not entirely dissatisfied with the muslin apart from the fact that it's way too small for a winter coat. How do I add the necessary ease? How much? Where? I cut through the middle and widen it? I don't know how to do this, so I'll take advice if you have any, or a link.
Just in case you are wondering, I used this most excellent tartan for a muslin because it's another op-shop find, wool with a high polyester content, that was cheaper to use than real muslin fabric and, I knew I would get a better general idea.
Now, I am having second though about wasting it, seeing that warts and all this is wearable, so I might take it apart, line it and have my own Vivienne Westwood moment. What do you think?

La Toile Vivienne Westwood Frankenpatron

Voici la toile n° 2 du Butterick 9214.
Car même si je n'ai pas trouvé le bon tissu, je pense à mon beau manteau d'hiver rouge tous les jours puisque que je porte la robe de chambre qui l'inspire tous les matins. Je pensais aussi utiliser le super tweed trouvé l'autre jour, mais en voyant ça, j'ai changé d'avis. Je trouverai bien une autre projet pour le mettre en valeur.
Je l'ai surnommé le Frankenpatron parce que je suis allée chercher des pièces un peu partout pour faire les changements que je voulais.
J'ai changé les manches (Burda  08/2010 #113) pour accomoder un petit pull et après avoir vu cette capuche de Derek Lam, je me suis dit que ça serait pratique pour la pluie bretonne (Burda 2694).

J'ai piqué la jupe du Vogue 3000 parce que les fronces à la taille de l'original ça faisait un peu beaucoup, j'ai encore un peu de travail sur la ceinture et j'ai mis des poches que vous ne voyez pas ici.

Les manches sont pas top top, il faut que je répartisse l'aisance un peu mieux, mais je trouve que le résultat est pas mal à part du fait que, c'est trop petit pour un manteau d'hiver et là, je ne sais pas quoi faire. Comment ajouter l'aisance nécéssaire? Où? Combien? Je coupe dans le milieu et je l'élargis? Si vous savez, je voudrais bien qu'on me montre.
Eh oui, j'ai fait une toile avec un tartan polyester-laine, que j'ai payé moins cher chez Emmaüs que le prix du coton que j'utilise habituellement et ça donne une meilleure idée du résultat final.
Mais oui, j'hésite à voir ce beau tissu aller à la poubelle après, parce que même avec ses défauts, cette toile est portable. Il est donc possible que je la découse et que je la recouse avec une doublure pour avoir mon petit moment Vivienne Westwood moi aussi. Vous en pensez quoi?

Bienvenue dans mes nouvelles pénates...Je vous invite à aller y faire un tour.
Allez vous balader sur la page Archives où j'ai mis en place un petit truc ingénieux pas de mon invention pour voir tous les billets concernant un projet particulier.

Je suis très consciente de la gène que peut occasionner le maintient d'un blog bilingue alors si vous cliquez sur l'onglet français, vous ne verrez que les billets dans cette langue. J'ai aussi mis en place une inscription par mail ou RSS des articles en français seulement en bas de page. 

Il me reste des petits trucs à faire, de l'ordre de quelques pixels, mais la navigation ici s'est nettement améliorée, ce qui est exactement l'effet désiré.
Parlant d'innovation, cette photo date de 1965, vous le croyez vous? Elle est de Melvin Sokolsky et la section "Classics" est très inspirante.
Je vais désormais aller consacrer tous mes loisirs à la couture.

Bear With Me

Remember this really cool print? 

When I saw it, I needed it and I stored it and I just got it back from the frame person and I just have to put it up but while I was searching this blog for sewing mishaps, I realized I couldn't find anything, it's my blog you see, and if I couldn't, you couldn't and I still haven't decided what I am going to do with  Mr C's waistcoat, so I gave the blog an overall cleaning job and the print is still on the floor.

I still have some thinkering to do, but we'll get there. Bear with me for a moment, this place is a mess.

Vous rappelez-vous de cette belle affiche?
Quand je l'ai vue, il me la fallait et l'encadreur vient de me la rendre et il faut que je la mette au mur et j'allais le faire mais j'ai mis un temps fou à trouver un lien de mon propre blog concernant mes bourdes et je ne l'ai pas trouvé tout de suite et si je ne l'ai pas trouvé, vous ne pouvez rien trouver vous non plus et je ne sais toujours pas quoi faire avec le gilet de Mr alors j'ai nettoyé le blog et l'affiche est toujours par terre.

Il me reste encore des petits détails à régler, mais je vais y arriver. Veuillez me pardonner pour le bordel.

Brilliant! The Second Edition

I was just about to trim and close Mr C's thrifted tweed waistcoat, when I realized that I put the breast pocket on the right side. 

I just get so worked up when I sew, I want it to be done so well, that I get tunnel vision and in the zone I do stuff like this or that. I should relax more if this is what I do when concentrated.

The options offered here are: 

Recut and redo, I do have some fabric left,

Make another breast pocket to even things out, 

Leave it, that's Mr C's solution.

Mistakes like this one, take the breath out of me. I will need a moment to reflect and recoup. Now, I feel so dumb!

Brillant! Deuxième Édition

J'allais fermer le gilet en tweed pas cher de Mr C quand j'ai vu ma bourde. La poche du haut est à droite!
J'veux tellement faire les choses bien quand je couds, je veux que ça soit si beau, que je fais des choses comme celle-ci, ou celle-là quand je suis super concentrée. Je crois qu'il faut que je sois plus zen.

Voici les options qui s'offrent à moi : 

Je recoupe et refait, il me reste du tissu,

Je fais une autre poche à droite pour équilibrer, 

Je laisse, c'est la solution de Mr C.

Des erreurs comme ça me coupe le souffle. Je vais avoir besoin d'un petit moment pour réfléchir et rattrapper. Je me sens si bête!

The End of Alexander Henry - Almost

Can you believe I am almost all out of Alexander Henry fabric? 

I made Yoshimi's Hatoto bag for my niece this weekend and out of the 13 yards I bought in the spring, I only have a couple left, which is prompting me to say I should hide it, use other fabrics for gifts and keep the rest for me. I love these girls (as seen here and here) and I am all out of the boys!

By the way, I am a contributor to the Refashion Co-op where my apron got a new nickname : the Brokeback Mountain apron. Pretty funny. The refashion girls are awesome, plenty creative and there is a few spots left for you if you want to join in and show us what you do.

Mr C's tweed vest is coming along well, the hand basting is all finished. I am so in love with that fabric, I may be developing a tweed fetish!

La Fin d'Alexander Henry - ou Presque

Je n'ai presque plus de tissu Alexander Henry, j'y crois pas!
J'ai fait un sac Hatoto de Yoshimi pour ma nièce en fin de semaine et des 13 verges que j'ai reçu au printemps, il ne m'en reste qu'une ou deux et je me disais qu'il fallait que je les cache et que j'arrête de faire des cadeaux avec si je veux quelque chose pour moi! J'aime trop ces filles (vues ici et ici) et je n'ai plus de garçons du tout!
En passant, je contribue au blog de recyclage Refashion Co-op et les participantes sont pleines de bonnes idées. Il reste des places si vous voulez vous joindre à nous et nous montrer ce que vous faites. Un commentaire très drôle m'a conduit a renommer mon tablier : le tablier Brokeback Mountain

Le gilet en tweed de Mr C avance doucement, j'ai fini tout le travail à la main. J'aime tellement ce tissu que je crois que je vais devenir fétichiste.

I am an optimist!

I do believe that the weather will get better and when it does, I'll be ready to BBQ!

Remember when I said I was preparing some stuff to do with my best friend Armelle? Well, we thrifted (this is when I saw the Tweed Fairy), made some strong tea, chatted and refashioned. In my case, a €0.50 pair of jeans with a wonky zipper and some scraps of Alexander Henry Wranglers fabric left from the His & His pyjama pants got a new life as a funky apron. Armelle chose a long skirt to do the same.

I've got a bit of a headless guy on top there, but you know, scraps are scraps. And speaking of scraps, We also made some of Laura's Pincushion Rings. 

Aren't these the cutest? Perfect size for the girlfriends' mending kit. They are such a great gift idea.

Je suis une optimiste!
Oui, je crois que l'été va arriver et quand je vais sortir le BBQ, je vais être prête!

Vous vous rappelez que je devais aller bricoler avec Armelle? Ben on a fait un tour chez Emmaüs (c'est là que j'ai rencontré la Fée du Tweed), on a fait du thé fort, on a jasé et on a transformé une vieille paire de jeans avec un zip pourri payée 50 centimes et les restes du tissu Wranglers d'Alexander Henry venus du pyjama Lui & Lui en un joli tablier spécial fille. Armelle a choisi un longue jupe pour faire pareil.

Il manque un bout de tête au garçon du dessus, mais ça arrive quand on travaile avec des petits bouts. On a pris d'autres restes aussi et on s'est fait des minis coussins à épingles qu'on a monté sur des bagues sur un idée de Laura. 

C'est pas mignon tout plein ça? De jolis petits cadeaux à mettre dans la boite à couture des copines.
