The Big Suit Take 1 / Prise 1

Are you all old enough to have seen Stop Making Sense the best concert movie ever? Well good readers, I'm old enough to have seen that tour. This was one of the first things I did as a young adult going away to college, I bought tickets to see The Talking Heads.
I am making Burda 11/2013 #118 at the moment which is so big, I feel like I'm wearing The Big Suit David Byrne was wearing on stage.

Right shoulder pinched / Epaule droite réduite

What I want is something warm in a neutral color to throw over anything I am wearing so I can get some bread with style.
I made a size 38 muslin with facing because I wanted to work on that Threads' tutorial on How to sew a Notched Collar. Last time I tried it, I only looked at the illustrations and since there is no illustration for step 4, it didn't go very well and it was a right ol' mess. Now that I get it, I feel better.
I am glad I did it because when I put the muslin on, I was completely dwarfed. There is big, too big and way big!
/

In the end, I ended up narrowing the shoulders by 2cm (I used Colette's tutorial), I also had way too much fabric under the sleeves in the back so I took off 2cm (this seams to happen to me a lot and I am looking forward to Sigrid's experimentation on the subject of back size), shortened the sleeves by 4cm and I lowered the back vent opening by 20cm (when you want warmth, a vent that goes right up to the waist is not a good idea).
I put a layer of knit-stuff-for-cycling-gear as per Melissa's instructions for extra cozyness. I took the opportunity to use the 2 threads flatlock feature of my serger and zigzaged the underlining to the facing instead of doing it by hand.
Isn't my vintage lining just amazing? It's been hiding in my stash for years waiting to get cut up. I loooove contrasting linings, sewing it made me so giddy!

I am using thrifted tweed again and had to be creative whilst dancing around moth holes, but I'll explain that later.
I'm almost finished and ready to do a little victory dance, stay tuned.

  1. Oo, does your victory dance look like David Byrne's? I can't wait to see the finished product. Aren't you glad you did a muslin? I always hate making one until the moment I put it on a realize that the fit is completely off. Then I'm so glad I haven't cut my good fabric.

    1. And I had so little fabric to work with that it would have made things very very complicated. I don't hate making muslins, I think it's a wise strategy when using expensive fabric...but I don't always make one.

  2. Fantastic work with the notched collar. The first few are always scary. Wishing you a wonderful festive season and a spectacular new year. :)

  3. Ha ha... I saw Talking Heads before the Stop Making Sense tour! (That didn't come to Australia as far as I know) I saw them in 1977 when I was in grade 11 - thank goodness for the muslin!

  4. 1977! That's very very cool! In 77 I was still into Genesis and prog rock!

  5. I love Stop Making Sense! I saw it only about 5 years ago and my husband and I were dancing around our house while we watched it.
